MetService warns of Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall

The MetService warns that a powerful and intricate weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms and significant rainfall to various parts of New Zealand.

Satellite imagery shows the front approaching the country over the Tasman Sea.

Northland and Auckland are particularly vulnerable, with a moderate chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon or early evening.

Thunderstorms are expected to form in these areas on Easter Sunday afternoon and evening, according to the forecast.

The MetService advises people to stay alert and keep up with the latest forecasts because the thunderstorms could be accompanied by heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, and even tornadoes.

On Sunday afternoon and evening, Northland could see heavy rain of 10-25mm/h and wind gusts of 90-100km/h, while Auckland could see similar conditions at night.

MetService also warns the public that one or two small and localised tornadoes are possible.

However, if these tornadoes do occur, they are expected to be minor.

MetService meteorologists are closely monitoring the situation, and the public should be kept up to date on any new developments.

MetService advises New Zealanders to remain vigilant and prepared for the possibility of severe weather.

To ensure everyone's safety and well-being, it's critical to stay up to date on the latest forecasts and follow official advice.
