PM reshuffles cabinet portfolios

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced changes to ministerial portfolios today, aiming to address emerging challenges in the media and disability sectors.

Paul Goldsmith will now oversee the Media and Communications portfolio, while Louise Upston takes on the Disability Issues portfolio.

The Prime Minister explained that senior Cabinet Ministers are needed to tackle significant challenges in these areas.

Goldsmith's new role leverages synergies with his existing Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio, enabling him to progress work on regulatory settings for modernising the media.

Upston's appointment frees Penny Simmonds to focus on the Environment portfolio and tertiary education reforms.

Melissa Lee will move outside of Cabinet, while Climate Change and Revenue Minister Simon Watts joins the Cabinet.

The Governor-General has been advised to implement these changes effective immediately.

The Prime Minister emphasised the Government's commitment to addressing evolving issues, stating, "Our Government is relentlessly focused on getting New Zealand back on track... I plan to adjust Ministerial responsibilities to make sure we are best set up to deliver for New Zealanders."
