MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Auckland, effective from 9 pm tonight to 2 am Monday, due to an unstable northwest airflow over the northern North Island.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the Auckland area, with potential localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour.
The Hauraki Gulf and nearby regions are most likely to experience these heavy rains, though other parts of Auckland may also be affected.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, and narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
MetService warns that driving conditions will be hazardous due to surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and exercise caution when traveling during this period.
