Residents of Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel Peninsula are keeping a watchful eye on the skies, as MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the next two days.
This weather phenomenon, characterized by a large, deep, and complex low-pressure system, is making its way southeast towards northern New Zealand.
Come Sunday, an associated front will be moving onto Northland, which is expected to bring heavy rain and easterly gales.
The situation escalates on Monday as this weather system continues its southeast trajectory, with the North Island set to experience the brunt of it.
For Auckland in particular, the warning signs are clear:
Strong Wind Warning
Starting from 3 pm on Sunday, October 29, until 9 am on Monday, October 30, residents can expect severe gale easterlies with gusts reaching a damaging 120 to 130 km/h in exposed areas.
These strong winds have the potential to wreak havoc on trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures.
Commuters, especially those in high-sided vehicles and on motorcycles, should exercise extreme caution.
Heavy Rain Watch
Over the same period, from 3 pm on Sunday to 9 am on Monday, intermittent heavy rain is anticipated.
Rainfall amounts could approach the threshold for an official warning, and the possibility of thunderstorms looms for Monday morning.
It's a heads-up for everyone in the affected areas to stay safe, secure outdoor belongings, and be prepared for challenging weather conditions in the coming days.
