A swimmer has died at Piha Beach this afternoon after being caught in a rip current.

Police were alerted just after 3.30 pm when the swimmer was pulled from the water.

Despite receiving medical attention at the scene, the swimmer tragically died.

The death will be referred to the Coroner, and further inquiries are underway.

The swimmer's identity has not been made public.
