Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle downgraded to a category 2 storm

Cyclone Gabrielle is predicted to reach Northland tonight.

MetService warns a large swell and a rise in ocean level (due to deep low pressure) will be something to look out for over the coming days.

Dangerous sea conditions and coastal inundation are possible, especially for east-facing coastlines and at high tide.

MetService confirmed the cyclone had been downgraded to a category 2.

A category 2 cyclone's wind speeds typically sit around 89-118kph, while a category 3 sits around 119kph and 157kph.

MetService has issued orange heavy rain watches for Northland, Auckland north of Whangaparaoa.

There are yellow heavy rain watches in place for Auckland from Whangaparaoa southwards.

Heavy swells of up to 7 metres are also possible next week.

NZ National Emergency Management Agency states, we’ll begin to see the first impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle across the North Island tomorrow, continuing to Tuesday.

Now is the time to prepare and take action to get your family and your household ready.

This is expected to be a widespread and significant weather event.

Auckland Transport (AT) urges the public to think carefully about whether they need to travel and to avoid crossing the harbour bridge unless absolutely necessary.

There is a possibility there may restrictions or closure of the Harbour Bridge. The public should also be prepared for road closures.

Be prepared. Expect there may be power cuts. Stay off the water. Stay home, and stay safe.
