The whitebaiting season kicks off on September 1, some Coasties will be buzzing with excitement.
As this beloved Kiwi pastime nears, the Department of Conservation (DOC) urges whitebaiters to stay safe, follow the rules, and protect the freshwater habitat.
DOC Freshwater Species Manager Emily Funnell says, "We want everyone to enjoy whitebaiting while minimising risks and preserving the fishery for future generations."
She highlights the importance of safety measures like wearing life jackets, carrying communication devices, and fishing with a mate.
Whitebaiting rules are available on the DOC website, and whitebaiters must also follow Biosecurity New Zealand's Check, Clean, Dry advice to prevent invasive species spread.
With four whitebait species threatened or at risk of extinction, responsible whitebaiting practices are crucial.
