Revolutionary sustainable surf park coming to Dairy Flat

Surf parks, also known as wave parks or wave pools, are artificial locations that generate waves for a controlled surfing experience.

They are revolutionizing the sport by catering to surfers of all skill levels.

In line with this trend, the surfing community is eagerly anticipating the introduction of a new wave pool technology that boasts sustainable infrastructure and innovative features.

Sir John Kirwan, a mental health advocate and former rugby player, has partnered with global surf park creators Aventuur to establish a sustainably powered wave pool in the Dairy Flat area.

Going beyond the conventional boundaries of surf parks, Kirwan's project in Auckland aims to exceed expectations.

The ambitious plans include a seven-hectare solar farm that will provide renewable energy for the project.

Kirwan, a 58-year-old rugby player, emphasized the excitement of being able to heat the water year-round.

Alongside the mesmerizing wave pool technology and the year-round heated lagoon, sustainability has been integrated into the design by these visionary collaborators.

Kirwan is optimistic that the surfing lagoon will generate more than 600 waves per hour, catering to different skill levels.

He also believes that it will enhance New Zealand's performance in the Olympics.

The project is expected to be a unique attraction, as no one else in the world has executed this concept in such a manner.

The Rugby World Cup winner expressed pride in their innovative approach.

Dubbed an innovative surf park, this upcoming venture by Wavegarden, a pioneering Spanish engineering firm in collaboration with Aventuur and Kirwan, will feature a sprawling 2.2-hectare surfing lagoon unlike any other.

However, what truly distinguishes this project is the groundbreaking inclusion of a data centre that will provide the heating for the water, a remarkable achievement on a global scale.

Scheduled to open in late 2026, this awe-inspiring surf park aims to offer not only thrilling waves but also eco-cabins, upscale housing, a farm-to-table restaurant, and various community amenities.

Aventuur has actively engaged with the local Dairy Flat residents from the initial stages of the project, prioritizing continuous dialogue to transform their dreams into reality.
